Yinka Shonibare exhibition opens at BK Museum today
I’m a big fan of Yinka Shonibare and am really really excited to see the exhibition that opens today. Some of the pieces are a bit more graphic than the one above but the victorian costumes made of Dutch wax prints are totally worth seeing. Apparently when Shonibare showed up for the official preview, he arrived with two friends in victorian drag. See here.

Robert E. Blum Gallery, 1st FloorThis exhibition is a major midcareer survey of work by the UK-based Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare MBE. Shonibare’s artwork explores contemporary African identity and its relationship to European colonialism through painting, sculpture, installation, and moving image. Shonibare is best known for his work with visual symbols, especially the richly patterned Dutch wax fabric produced in Europe for a West African market that he uses in a wide range of applications. His tableaux of headless mannequins costumed in this fabric evoke themes of history and its legacy for future generations. Through these works he explores the complex web of interactions, both economic and racial, that reveal inequalities between the dominant and colonized cultures of Europe, Asia, and Africa. A site-specific installation created for this presentation titled Mother and Father Worked Hard So I Can Play will be on view in several of the Museum’s period rooms.
Another site-specific installation, Party Time—Re-Imagine America: A Centennial Commission by Yinka Shonibare MBE, will be on view at the Newark Museum in Newark, New Jersey, from July 1, 2009, to January 3, 2010, in the dining room of the museum’s 1885 Ballantine House.

This blog confused me at first because I thought it was called “What Chuck Whore.” Now I realize that it’s actually a blog dedicated the fashion of Chuck Bass on GossipGirl which is actually a subject entirely worthy of its own blog. .. very much in the same style as CWL, I love this blog and I think it’s sweet. This guy says: “Sometimes Mr. Internet shows me stuff I’m sure my girlfriend (“Roo”) will like. Sara Watson, a design student studying drawing at the University of Central Lancashire, spent three weeks taking a battered old Skoda and making it “disappear” by painting it so that it blends in with the surrounding area.
The BBC reports that the car is now being used as advertising for the local recycling firm that donated the vehicle.

The coolest My Little Ponies you will ever see
Speaking of My Little Ponies…
I think my sister Margaret showed me Mari Kasurinen’s Star Wars-themed My Little Ponies a few months ago, and I really should have posted about them back then. In case it’s not immediately obvious to you, these are the greatest things in the universe. Not just because they’re really cool conceptually, but because they’re spot on. Take, for example, My Little Edward Scissorhands:
That pony has the exact same emotion as Johnny Depp does. Yeah yeah, I know. It’s a My Little Pony that’s dressed up like Edward Scissorhands. Ha ha. But it’s crazy awesome.
Also, the Joker. I know it’s a My Little Pony, but it’s just about as creepy as Heath Ledger was.

This reminds me of when I was a little girl and I used to arrange all my My Little Ponies in a circle around me. And if I was feeling particularly amitious, I’d use my troll dolls, too.
Anyway, this artist (Brooke Inman) uses colored pencils, photographs, markers and other shit to do this. I can just imagine Emily watching me do something like this and saying “You’re stressing me out!”

Grain Edit’s interview with Frank Chimero
I’m a big fan of Frank Chimero. His state illustrations are fantastic (when’s New York, Frank? Or Vermont, or Indiana??), and I used to have this inspirational poster as my desktop at work for a while (the “Aw, Damnit” part got to me, eventually). Anyway, Grain Edit interviewed Frank recently, and it’s really fascinating. I’m not even a graphic designer or much of an artist (though I’m known to doodle geometric shapes on notebooks at work).
The whole interview is a great read, but my favorite part is when Frank describes how he comes up with the ideas for the states. Here’s an excerpt:
Here, I’m trying out a few ideas. Something long and curling? An alligator? A fish? A manatee? Nah. That manatee doesn’t look like one. It’s too skinny. Not cowish enough. Doesn’t work well with the shape. The alligator is nice, but too predictable? His legs don’t integrate in very nicely into the shape. A train? Oh. Wow. That’s nice. Maybe we can use the smoke to trail off to the left to fill that difficult space. Ok. Bingo!
So cool. Anyway, Frank also mentions this great video he did for Good Magazine. I hadn’t seen it before and I suggest you watch it both for his great drawings and for the info.

Quirky French director Michel Gondry (The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) teams up with HBO’s equally off-kilter series, The Flight of the Conchords, and the resulting episode — “Unnatural Love,” which airs February 15 — is pure, unadulterated pleasure.
The Conchords, of course, are a New Zealand folk band. But the love interest here is Australian, and that allows for endless, over-the-top Aussie jokes (expect plenty of references to the continent’s criminal past). As for Gondry, his distinctive, dreamlike touch turns both of the episode’s musical numbers into surreal showstoppers.
